Funny Food Advertisements

Last Friday, after a nice cold beer in Sharons, we discovered a new chang fen shop on our way home. While the Chang Fen itself were ok only, the restaurant had some quite interesting posters on the wall.

Who would have thunk that “sex sells” also works for roast duck? Without further comments, the photos:

Restaurant Test: Fuji ChangFen

Guilin Restaurants, Fuji Changfen Zhou
Today we went to “Fuji Changfen Zhou”, belonging to the Guilin Good Luck Restaurant (which again belongs to our Chinese Fast Food Overlords “Guilinren”).

It is located quite convenient on the walking street between the Clock Tower and the Paulaner Biergarden. Our first impression is a pretty good one: No waitresses in front trying to get you in and the menu with prices is hanging on the wall. No trying to rip you off with a “foreigner menu” like Soup Town and many others like to do.
Guilin Food, Chang Fen
The furnishing is simple and functional, but by no means cheap looking. The kitchen is separated from the restaurant by some glass windows, so you can actually watch the staff prepare your food.

Back to the food. We had to order and pay directly after entering the restaurant. We (3 people) decided for:

Guilin Porridge
Pork Chang Fen: RMB 7
Beef Chang Fen: RMB 5
Egg Chang Fen: RMB 3
Shrimp Chang Fen: RMB 8
Porridge: RMB 4

The food arrived pretty quickly. The Chang Fen were ok in taste but the Shrimp ones were a bit low on Shrimps, while the Pork ones somehow got an extra topping of salt. The porridge was good. Our favorite were definitely the Beef Chang Fen.

All together a nice little fast food restaurant, good when you need a snack, but nothing for when you are really hungry.

Yumi’s latest culinary creation

For all of you who like their toasts a bit more “well-done”:

Yumi Cafe in Can Luan Road offers now Bamboo Charcoal Toast Bread. Black as the night and with an eerie taste, certainly nothing for the average white-bread munching expat.

So when you are in the San Li Dian Area and crazy brave enough to try it, better get a loaf before they drop it out of their shelves again.

Hello Guilin Expat!

Here are a couple of photos taken at the last ‘Sharon’s Saturday Party’. What great food and fun company!
Sharon was even kind enough to set up a shelf in her restaurant to be used as a lending library for books, DVDs and CDs one might be finished with.

Looking forward to the next one!

Saddam’s BBQ

Who would have thunk that Iraq’s most favourite dictator was also a famous BBQ cook*? Until some weeks ago you could still go to Wen Min Lu and buy some of Saddam’s “Crazy BBQ Chicken Wings”.

Unluckily with the demise of “el presidente” the business became less and less, so now only the advertising banner is left on top of a shop selling clothes.

*That being said, we knew that Saddam’s WMD program had a profound impact on Guilin’s local cuisine (e.g. stinky tofu)

Saturday Party Photos

It was a nice “globalised” party again. Expats from around the globe – the Americas, Australia, Europe – and inpats from Guilin took part. The international cuisine was excellently composed by Chinese cooks. There were German Gulasch, French baguette, Austrian Palatschinken, Chinese beer and Australian “Cabernet Sauvignon”.
We talked in English, Chinglish and Dinglish, German , Chinese and Crazy Chinese.
And some of us smoked Virginian Tobacco. Yes you can do this in China! And there is nobody to report it to the police! :-)

On behalf of Sharon, the photos from last Saturday’s party.
