The history of bridges spanning the Li River can be traced back several hundreds of years.

 

From the first officially mentioned pontoon bridges, to an early metal frame construction in the 30th of last century to todays modern concrete bridges.

 

As the construction methods have changed, so have the name given to the bridge.

Liberation Bridge

Guilin is a city full of lakes, rivers and ponds. Guilinese build different kinds of bridges to cross these waters since they first started dwelling here.

List of all bridges

While the last bridges were named after the leader of the Kuomintang, Chiang Kai-shek, they were renamed to Liberation Bridge after the victory of the Communist Party in the civil war. (more history)

 

Todays Liberation Bridge was build after the previous bridge couldn't handle the ever increasing traffic anymore. In 2001 it opened to the public.
